From Intern to Tech Lead: A 10-Year Journey at Present Connection

This year marks a special milestone for Present Connection’s valued team members. Ernestas, our Tech Lead, celebrates ten remarkable years with the company! We are happy to have such a talented and motivated person on our team.

In this Q&A, Ernestas shares his journey from intern to Tech Lead, highlighting the experiences that shaped his career and the reasons behind his decade-long commitment to Present Connection.

Can you tell us about your role when you first joined the company and how it has evolved over the years?

I was an intern at the #1 internship of Present Connection! It took me one month to get a job proposal, so I started as a full-stack developer. Over the years, my level also changed until I became the team lead. After that, I got a proposal to be a tech lead and work with different clients. I’m still doing it and able to enjoy it.

What motivated you to stay with the company for a decade?

Being able to express yourself is one of the most important things a person can do. Throughout these years, I have still been able to do it in this company, and I find it very valuable. I feel freedom here to express myself and bring my ideas to life. Additionally, the people here are something special. Finally, I am a settled person :D.

Can you share any memorable experiences over ten years at Present Connection?

Let’s make a list:

  1. Burning customer hair.
  2. A colleague’s accident with a fence.
  3. Wrestling between director and JR developer at Christmas party.
  4. Colleague’s 1200km+ running in three months.
  5. Working with customers for 9+ years.
  6. Having an office at a former hospital building.
  7. Growing from 7 to 70+ employees.
  8. Sleeping at the office.
  9. All seven company employees worked for one customer for extra hours for a few months.
  10. Underground Christmas party.

There are lots more, but they can’t be revealed in public 😀

What have been some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced while working here, and how did you overcome them?

I’m still facing the challenge of not being able to say No. Most of the time, this leads to a situation where I can’t fulfill things that I promised. Another challenge that I faced is switching between multiple projects. It can be situations where I need to change 2 or 3 projects per day and solve different problems in different contexts. Finally, there is always a challenge to make a decision that influences another person’s career.

Can you tell us about initiatives or projects you’ve been involved in?

Sport is my passion in life. The Present Connection also allowed me to realize this by organizing running & cycling challenges and basketball or table tennis tournaments.

From a project perspective, I worked for 8+ years on projects that helped create and construct widgets. It was the most complex project I faced. During those years, I touched different business cases, different code quality, and different people. I can count 16+ projects that I worked on. It felt great to switch and learn so many different cases.

At Present Connection, you are the face of PC internships and Academy. How did you become one?

Another initiative that we started is the Academy. It was a time when I felt comfortable and wanted to try something new. It all started about six years ago. So, I began React and Front-end Academy. It was a great and motivating experience that boosted my knowledge to another level. Watching how new talents grow and can be part of it still motivates me. As a result of it, I continued to do full-stack internships. It’s symbolic that I was part of the #1 internship and now lead this program in the company.

Looking back on your ten years with the company, what advice would you give someone just starting their career here?

1. Don’t be afraid to take the opportunity even if you think you are not strong enough to try it. If people suggest that to you, it means you deserve it.

2. Proactiveness is the key.

As Present Connection continues to evolve, one thing remains certain: the dedication and passion of its employees. We look forward to seeing what the next ten years hold for both Ernestas and Present Connection!
